Saw Japandroids at Lincoln Hall tonight - what an awesome show. Endless smiling from start to finish. Moshing. Really heartfelt performance. I get so excited when you can tell someone is on stage putting every bit of energy and heart into their work. Loved when Brian King got on the mic to introduce the next, and my favorite song off of Celebration Rock, Younger Us and said “You have to work hard for your money and so do we” and kicked off this insanely energetic performance of the song. Watching the people around me not give a shit and dance their faces off, and the band just go for it reminded me of summers from 8-9 years ago. Favorite quote of the night to sum the show up was ”No shame, don’t give a fuck-Rob Zombie reference…“
I think this show resonated with me because the band is at this juncture where they’re no longer kicking and screaming, trying to avoid adulthood-but instead, accepting the grown-up card. They maintain the best parts of loving recklessly, living hopefully, and telling anyone else to go to hell, with a new thoughtfulness and maturity (if you can maturely tell someone to go to hell.)
Highlights:
Younger Us— and all the passion put behind that performance
Young Hearts Spark Fire — because it was the song that made me fall for Japandroids & held sentimental value for me
The House That Heaven Built — just for it’s gravity and dynamism, like thinking about the idea of the “soul of a city” and it felt especially real and alive last night
Continuous Thunder— I loved/hated that the band felt they needed to justify the performance of this song. It’s a slow song, and, in a way, jarring against the back drop of the high-energy set list. They gave this disclaimer of grandeur before playing it, saying if anyone didn’t like the slowness of this song, it’d be a great time to get a drink, and that if they didn’t play it tonight then they probably wouldn’t ever play it live- and that was half-diasspointing/ half-endearing because they’re still so humble. Continuous Thunder is top three for me off Celebration Rock for it’s lyrics alone.
If I had all of the answers
And you had the body you wanted
Would we love with a legendary fire?
Literally gives me chills.
